A super-premium herb liqueur – the birth of a new category
Hungary and Europe’s first ever super-premium herb liqueur, Unicum Riserva was introduced in 2017. Its novelty lies in the method of production, namely, that is aged in two different special casks.
The basis of this drink, Unicum is aged in a used cask – which is a customary international distillation technique. This cask is not only the biggest, but also the oldest one in the labyrinth of cellars under Soroksári Road – it is no less than 80 years old. Over the decades the wood of the cask has developed a special coating called “black honey”, which gives Unicum a silky, complex taste. After this, the drink is aged further in “Gönci” barrels – this second phase makes Unicum Riserva more round and mellow. It also adds a certain fruity-spicy harmony to the liqueur, which reminds us of the inimitable essence of Tokaj.
Finally, to highlight and round these characters, we add the 2007 vintage Tokai aszú of Dobogó Winery to the drink.
